Two major Alzheimer’s disease studies at the School of Medicine have received federal funding totaling $30 million over the next five years. The National Institutes on Aging of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provided the funding, which renews support for research to identify biological changes or biomarkers that can be used to detect and track the disease.

New research by a team of biomedical engineers in the School of Engineering & Applied Science has shed light on mutations behind cardiac arrhythmia, a potentially fatal heart disorder. The work, led by Professor Jianmin Cui, PhD (right), and Mark Zaydman, a fifth-year MD/PhD student, creates new opportunities for potential treatments.

The Lofts of Washington University project has been awarded LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Located in the Delmar Loop, the $80 million residential and retail project is projected to be 46 percent more efficient than standard construction. The complex was designed to minimize impact on the environment while creating healthy spaces.

Shenyang Guo, PhD, was recently installed as the Frank J. Bruno Distinguished Professor of Social Work Research. Guo is the McDonnell International Scholars Academy’s ambassador to Fudan University and assistant vice chancellor for international affairs-Greater China.

James P. Keating was a meticulous physician who helped mold hundreds of medical residents, organized the first pediatric intensive-care unit west of the Mississippi River and was sought for his ability to solve mystery illnesses. He died Dec. 25, 2014, in Cary, North Carolina.
