Three faculty members named AAAS fellows

Three faculty members at Washington University have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society. They are Mary C. Dinauer, MD, PhD, and David M. Holtzman, MD, of the School of Medicine, and Robert G. Kranz, PhD, of Arts & Sciences.

First same-sex couple legally married in Missouri met at Brown School

Sadie Pierce (left) and her partner, Lilly Leyh, became the first same-sex couple to legally marry in Missouri earlier this month. Leyh is set to graduate in May with master’s degrees in social work and business administration, and Pierce is a recent alum of the Brown School.

Treatment strategy may reduce infants’ wheezing caused by virus

The antibiotic azithromycin may reduce the risk of recurrent wheezing in infants hospitalized with a common respiratory infection, according to a small pilot study at the School of Medicine. Reduced wheezing may lower an infant’s risk of developing asthma over the next several years, according to the researchers, including first author Avraham Beigelman, MD.

Rhodes finalist, alumna Kornblatt helps women find their voice

​Washington University alumna Louisa Kornblatt is working to help women overcome gender-based violence and reclaim their voice. Kornblatt, who earned an Arts & Sciences degree this year, was a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.

Fewer surgeries for breast cancer patients

One in four women who undergo breast conservation surgery for stage 0-2 breast cancer return for more surgery. But breast surgeon Julie Margenthaler, MD, says in JAMA Surgery that new guidelines should reduce the need for subsequent surgeries.
