The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) was spotted in Houston in 1985 but can now be found throughout the South and as far north as Maine. To reconstruct its spread, scientists at Tyson Research Center turned to the new discipline of landscape genetics. Correlating genetic patterns with landscape patterns, they concluded that the mosquito had hitched a ride along highways.

Beau Ances, MD, PhD, has been a leader in unraveling the effects of long-term HIV infection on patients. An associate professor of neurology, Ances is working to develop strategies to reduce memory problems in such patients.

As a Wash U student in the 1960s, George Lipsitz, PhD, was impressed by St. Louis’ fight for social justice as well as its cultural spaces. On Nov. 4, Lipsitz — now a professor of black studies and sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara — returns to campus to give the keynote address for the Center for the Humanities’ Faculty Book Celebration.
