New drugs for bad bugs

WUSTL chemist Timothy Wencewicz, PhD, says we’ll stay ahead of antibiotic resistance if we find new kinds of drugs. He’s hoping that new core chemical structures can jump-start stalled efforts to discover more antibiotics — and entice big pharmaceutical companies to develop them.

Smoking cessation may improve mental health

Although many health professionals who treat people with psychiatric problems overlook their patients’ smoking habits, new research at the School of Medicine shows that people who struggle with mood problems or addiction can safely quit smoking and that kicking the habit is associated with improved mental health.

New chef promises more variety, local ingredients at Ibby’s Bistro

Jon Lowe is the new chef at Ibby’s in the Danforth University Center. Learn more about Lowe, who loves French cooking and making granola with his 3-year-old daughter. He previously worked at Clayton seafood restaurant Oceano Bistro.

Civil rights champion Feldblum to help commemorate Civil Rights Act anniversary

Civil rights champion and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission member Chai Feldblum will visit WUSTL on March 17 and 18 to help commemorate the passing of Title VII, a key piece of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as well as to celebrate International Women’s Day.

New cyclotron to help doctors detect cancers

A new cyclotron recently was installed at the East Building on the School of Medicine campus. The unit, in the works for more than a decade, is a particle accelerator that will produce radioactive compounds, many of which are used with PET scanners to detect specific types of cancers.
