WUSTL scientists have discovered two tiny grains of silica, the most common constituent of sand, in meteorites that fell to Earth in Antarctica. The discovery is surprising because the grains are thought to come from a supernova, a massive star that exploded before the solar system’s birth, rather than red giants, the source of all other silica grains found so far.
