Evolutionary biologist W.D. Hamilton predicted that organisms ought to evolve the ability to discriminate degrees of kinship more finely to direct help to those with whom they share the most genes. But two WUSTL biologists point out many cases where “a veil of ignorance” prevents organisms, such as honeybees, from gaining such information. Instead, they consider a situation from the group’s perspective — regardless of kinship — thus preventing conflict.
