The fate of 3 billion: New book sheds light on the energy poor

Close to 3 billion people in the developing world burn fires in rudimentary stoves for cooking and heating needs. As a result, 4 million people die each year, and the black soot created has a staggering negative impact on health, climate and advancement of the poor. Gautam N. Yadama, PhD, professor and director of international programs at the Brown School, and photographer Mark Katzman explore the issue in a new book.

Program connects high school biology teachers with latest research — and each other

A master’s degree program designed for high school science teachers nationwide is helping them learn techniques for inspiring the most motivated science students as well as students with other interests. The two-year program through University College in Arts & Sciences offers online courses during the school year and an on-campus summer institute.

Public health conference ​​​to address obesity

The obesity epidemic and how science may be able to impact it is the focus of the upcoming annual conference of WUSTL’s Institute for Public Health. Graham Colditz, MD, DrPH, deputy director of the institute and a disease prevention expert at Siteman Cancer Center, will deliver the keynote address.

Christine Dolan, coordinator for LGBT Student Involvement and Leadership, has helped organize events in honor of LGBT History Month. Tonight’s Out in the Workplace event will help such students navigate the job market.
