Student envisions growing tomatoes on The Hill

American produce is shipped an average of 1,500 miles before reaching its point of sale. In St. Louis, the 14-acre Magic Chef complex sits empty and unused. Graduate student Haley O’Brien wants to address both problems by growing hydroponic tomatoes on — and for — The Hill, a historic Italian-American enclave that boasts some of the finest fare in the Midwest.

Procedure to open blocked carotid arteries tested

Doctors at the School of Medicine are investigating a new minimally invasive procedure to open blocked carotid arteries in patients whose poor health or advanced age makes the traditional open surgery too risky. Pictured are carotid arteries, which feed blood to the brain.

Executive MBA class kicks off academic year

The 43rd Executive MBA class gathered at the Knight Center last month to kick off its academic year with Go! Week. This was the first time students from the new Denver EMBA program were in St. Louis. Go! Week also included a celebration of the 30th anniversary of Olin’s EMBA program.

A taste of Washington University in South Korea

WUSTL student Johnny Lee is bringing a taste of the university to his native Daejeon, South Korea. Lee just opened Johnny’s Pub, a place for pizza and pints. Beers on tap include Olin, Danforth, Wydown and Brookings. Lee studied business here as a freshman, but returned home to fulfill his military service obligation. He plans to come back after completing his service.

WUSTL health researcher seeking mothers interested in weight loss

Debra Haire-Joshu, PhD, associate dean for research in the Brown School, is looking for mothers ages  18-45 with children ages 2-4 to participate in a study. She is investigating whether new Parents as Teachers family wellness information encourages families to lead more active lifestyles.
