Project ARK and The SPOT have been tapped as a model and mentor to what is hoped will be a similar center in East St. Louis, Ill. A talk at WUSTL by Ernest Moniz, PhD, U.S. energy secretary, has been postponed due to the federal government shutdown. He was to discuss President Obama’s climate action plan Friday, Oct. 4. Moniz’s talk will be the 52nd annual Joseph W. Kennedy Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the Department of Chemistry in Arts & Sciences.

Why do some St. Louis neighborhoods rebound while others languish? That question will be at the forefront of a talk presented by Hank Webber, WUSTL’s executive vice chancellor for administration, and Todd Swanstrom, PhD, of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The lecture, “Neighborhood Change in the St. Louis Region Since 1970: What Explains Neighborhood Success” is 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Missouri History Museum.

George Pepe, PhD, professor and former chair of classics in Arts & Sciences, received the David Hadas Teaching Award for his commitment to and excellence in teaching first-year undergraduates. Pepe received the award Sept. 9 during the annual Arts & Sciences reception, which also celebrates the start of a new academic year and introduces new faculty.
