Tribute to jazz legend, alum opens music series

The Jazz at Holmes Series opens tonight with a tribute to saxophonist Oliver Nelson (1932-75), a WUSTL alumnus and composer of one of the most influential jazz albums of the 1960s. A seven-piece jazz ensemble will perform a free concert at 8 p.m. in Holmes Lounge.

Incisionless surgery corrects swallowing disorder

By passing surgical instruments through a patient’s mouth, School of Medicine doctors have corrected a problem that prevented a woman from easily swallowing food and liquids. The operation is one of the first of its kind in the region performed through a natural opening in the body rather than an incision. Pictured is the surgical knife (blue) in the esophagus.

WUSTL’s United Way campaign kicks off with $700,000 goal

WUSTL community members can help the United Way of Greater St. Louis support local agencies by contributing to the university’s 2013 United Way campaign, which began Aug. 29 with a kick-off breakfast at the Whittemore House. The university’s United Way campaign goal is $700,000.

Obituary: Helen Power, former coordinator of women’s studies, 77

Helen Power, PhD, who made an indelible mark on the women’s studies program, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013. Her career as a senior lecturer of English and as a senior lecturer and coordinator of women’s studies, both in Arts & Sciences, spanned more than 30 years. Power was 77.
