Altering mix of gut microbes prevents obesity, but diet is key

The mix of microbes living inside the gut can protect against obesity, but a healthy diet is critical, according to School of Medicine scientists who transplanted intestinal microbes from obese and lean twins into mice and fed the animals different diets. Students captured life on campus and abroad for WUSTL’s first summer photo contest. Winning images, including this one, taken in New Zealand by senior Cole Bishop, will be displayed in January Hall next month.

Email privacy a hallmark of a free society

As encrypted email services like Lavabit shut their doors, the importance of email privacy becomes even clearer, said Neil Richards, JD, privacy law expert and WUSTL professor. The ability to confidentially share ideas with others is a hallmark of a free society, he said.

Shining a little light changes metal into semiconductor

Two WUSTL materials science engineers changed the electronic properties of a new class of materials — just by exposing it to light. Parag Banerjee, PhD, and Srikanth Singamaneni, PhD, changed a composite into a semiconductor, a common part of computers and other electronics.

Freecell Architecture wins PXSTL competition

The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts  selected Freecell Architecture as winner of PXSTL. The $50,000 urban design competition winner will create a temporary space for outdoor perfor-mances in Grand Center beginning next spring.
