?The fall 2013 Assembly Series opens with Eula Biss, First Year Reading Program author, on Sept. 9. Her latest work is Notes from No Man’s Land. Several programs will feature thought leaders on such weighty topics as health, human rights, sustainability and diversity. The series aims to spark meaningful discussion and a greater understanding of our world.???

A team of scientists has created a ring of protein and pigments — half synthetic, half natural — that can absorb more sunlight than all-natural light-harvesting antennas. Such antennas in plants help capture the energy in sunlight. WUSTL’s Photosynthetic Antenna Research Center organized the project.

Service First, one of WUSTL’s biggest and most beloved community service programs, returns Saturday, Aug. 31. Some 1,1oo first-year students, plus many more staff and faculty, will paint murals, pull weeds and organize libraries at 12 St. Louis schools. Fraternities Alpha Delta Phi and Alpha Kappa Psi will hold an all-you-can-eat frozen yogurt event from 3-6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, on the South 40. Proceeds will benefit Angels’ Arms, a nonprofit that supports foster children.
The Midwest Society for Devel-opmental Biology will hold its annual meeting Sept. 26-28 at the School of Medicine. Registration closes Sept. 5.
