Today marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. As we reflect on Martin Luther King Jr.’s message, learn about the latest news in an ongoing study of African-American health in St. Louis. The first brief of the yearlong project, led by the Brown School’s Jason Purnell, calls for improving health by focusing on educational and economic opportunities.

Bacteria adjust to wide fluctuations in food supply by controlling how big they get and how often they divide. WUSTL biologists have worked out the control system E. coli use to delay division so they can bulk up when food is abundant. The control system also can be stopped, so it may offer an opportunity to design new antibiotics.
