School of Medicine announces plans for new research building

The School of Medicine plans to construct an energy-efficient, multistory research building dedicated to interdisciplinary research. Positioned along McKinley Avenue just west of Taylor Avenue, the six-story building eventually will house 138,000 square feet of highly flexible, open laboratories. Wilson named world’s ‘Hottest Researcher’

Richard Wilson, PhD, director of The Genome Institute at the School of Medicine, was named the world’s most-cited researcher by Thomson Reuters’ ScienceWatch. The list of most influential researchers also included Elaine Mardis, PhD, Li Ding, PhD, and Robert Fulton, all of The Genome Institute.

Older adult clumsiness linked to brain changes

For many older adults, the aging process seems to go hand in hand with an annoying increase in clumsiness. New WUSTL research suggests some of these reaching and grabbing difficulties may be caused by changes in the mental frame of reference that older adults use to visualize nearby objects.

Schaal to chair advisory group leading National Academy of Sciences’ Gulf of Mexico program

Barbara A. Schaal, PhD, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences, has been appointed chair of an advisory group that will lead the National Academy of Sciences’ new Gulf of Mexico program, established as part of settlements with British Petroleum and Transocean Ltd. following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion.

SCOTUS Myriad Genetics decision a significant shift from status quo

In a recent decision, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously held that naturally occurring DNA sequences are “products of nature” and cannot be patented. “The court’s holding represents a significant shift from the status quo,” said Kevin Emerson Collins, JD, patent law expert and professor of law. “It reverses both the lower court and 20 years of precedent at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.”

High schoolers explore engineering hands-on

More than 30 local high school juniors and seniors were on campus for the third annual Explore Engineering day, sponsored by the School of Engineering & Applied Science. The community outreach event allows students to work with WUSTL engineering faculty and students and get hands-on experience in engineering projects to promote critical thinking.

Report community service, earn chance for grant

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service maintains the Community Counts database to track community service activities of all WUSTL schools, departments, programs and groups. July 25 is the deadline to submit initiatives and information from the 2012-13 academic year. Each new or updated initiative submitted will be entered into a drawing for a $500 grant to support the project.

Whispers Café closes for renovations

Whispers Café in Olin Library is closed through Aug. 1 for renovations. When the café reopens for the start of the fall semester, students, faculty and staff can expect a fresh look, with new menu boards and merchandise cases, a stronger system for moving people through the line quickly during peak hours, and a counter that allows for easier interaction between patrons and servers.
