Students’ low-cost medical device wins inaugural Discovery Competition

A low-cost medical device targeted at improving world health won the top prize in the School of Engineering & Applied Science’s inaugural Discovery Competition. Sparo Labs took the largest prize of $25,000. The company’s plan stems from an award-winning project to develop a low-cost, pocket-sized spirometer, which measures lung function.

?Two WUSTL scholars named 2013 Guggenheim Fellows??

?Susan Rotroff, PhD, a classical archaeologist, and Leigh Schmidt, PhD, historian of American religion, are the latest WUSTL scholars to be selected for prestigious fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Rotroff and Schmidt were among 175 Guggenheim Fellows chosen in 2013 from nearly 3,000 applicants, including artists, scholars and scientists, in the U.S. and Canada.?

Engineering professor working to help bridges withstand natural disasters

Chenyang Lu, PhD, professor of computer science and engineering, and colleagues have developed a unique wireless system to help bridges and other structures withstand storms or earthquakes. The simulator uses real-time measurements relayed by wireless sensors.

Timothy Eberlein, MD, chair of the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine, has been elected president of the Southern Surgical Association, one of the nation’s leading medical groups.

Obituary: Susan E. Lanzendorf, director of IVF lab, 54

Susan E. Lanzendorf, PhD, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the
in vitro fertilization lab, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, from complications of pancreatic cancer. She was 54.
