The nation’s oldest and largest student-run carnival gets under way soon. The event brings together WUSTL students, faculty and staff with neighbors and the greater St. Louis community for a weekend filled with rides, carnival fare and family friendly plays. More than 80,000 people are expected to attend the Thurtene Carnival April 19-21.

The Next Generation Science Standards have been released, and WUSTL members are playing significant roles. Michael Wysession, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, in Arts & Sciences, was part of the 41-member team that helped write the standards. And the Institute for School Partnership is poised to help K-12 schools implement them in the St. Louis region.

Either physical therapy or arthroscopic surgery can relieve pain and improve mobility in patients with a torn meniscus and arthritis in the knee, according to researchers from the School of Medicine and six other centers. But the results aren’t entirely clear because many of the patients assigned to physical therapy eventually had surgery.

Ira C. Gall, MD, professor emeritus of clinical obstetrics and gynecology and a strong supporter of the School of Medicine, died Friday, March 29, 2013, from complications of pancreatic cancer.

Marilyn Krukowski, PhD, professor emerita of biology in Arts & Sciences, died Sunday, April 7, 2013, in St. Louis from complications of multiple sclerosis. Krukowski taught vertebrate structure (anatomy) in the Department of Biology for more than 30 years.
