Sleep loss precedes Alzheimer's symptoms

Sleep is disrupted in people who likely have early Alzheimer’s disease, but do not yet have the memory loss or other cognitive problems characteristic of full-blown disease, School of Medicine researchers report. Ancient sea lamprey gets DNA decoded

A large team of scientists has decoded the genome of a sea lamprey — one of the few ancient, jawless species of vertebrates that has survived through the modern era. Analyzing its genome will provide scientists with insights into the evolution of organisms as diverse as frogs, chickens and humans, all of which have backbones.

Exhibition, reading to feature William Gass

“William H. Gass: The Soul Inside the Sentence” opened March 11 in Olin Library’s Ginkgo Reading Room and Grand Staircase Lobby. Drawing on Special Collections’ archive of his literary papers, the exhibit includes items related to each of Gass’ many books, which range from novels to short story collections to essays and literary criticism. Gass also will give a reading at 4 p.m. April 2 titled “How to Behave Around Books.”

France at War Film Series begins tomorrow

If American war films are characterized by large-scale combat and appeals to valor, French war cinema is arguably more intimate and psychologically driven. From Tuesday through Thursday, March 19-21, the Kemper Art Museum will present three iconic films as part of its France at War Film Series.

Local chapter of national health services executives hosts inaugural meeting

The St. Louis chapter of the National Association of Health Services Executives will have its inaugural meeting Thursday, March 21, in the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center. The meeting is open to anyone interested in advancing the causes of health-care leadership diversity and health disparities.

Wednesday is deadline
for military care package

The WUSTL military care package group has been sending snacks, sporting goods, toiletries, baked goods and other needed items to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan since March 2004. The deadline to make contributions to the next mailing is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 20.
