Human Connectome Project releases major data set on brain connectivity

The Human Connectome Project, a five-year endeavor to link brain connectivity to human behavior, has just released a set of high-quality imaging and behavioral data to the scientific community. The project will have a “major impact on our understanding of the healthy adult human brain,” said HCP consortium co-leader David C. Van Essen, PhD, Alumni Endowed Professor at the School of Medicine.

School of Law launches national semester-in-practice externship

Beginning in fall 2013, the School of Law will offer the Semester-in-Practice Externship, an innovative program that empowers second- and third-year law students to gain hands-on professional experience anywhere in the country. Through the externship program, students will earn academic credit by spending a semester working full time for a nonprofit, government or in-house corporate law office in the location of their choice.

Study may explain why some people get pimples

In a boon for teenagers everywhere, scientists have discovered there are “bad” strains of acne bacteria associated with pimples and “good” strains that may protect the skin.

Olin students work with St. Louis startup Lockerdome on market and finance research

LockerDome CEO and co-founder Gabe Lozano, who spoke recently at Olin Business School, shares some of the credit for attracting investors with students at Olin. Student teams in one of the school’s venture consulting courses worked closely with LockerDome’s CFO, Mark Lewis, on market and financial analysis research projects this semester. Here, Lozano speaks about the collaboration on video.

Men’s basketball team hosts NCAA second round Saturday

The No. 17 men’s basketball team will host No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan University in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday, March 9, at the Field House. Game time is 7 p.m.

Spring forward and have a great break

Spring break begins this weekend, and, as students and faculty take a mid-March break, so does the daily Record email. The Record will be published Wednesday, March 13, then resume regular publication Monday, March 18. In the meantime, have a safe, relaxing break, and don’t forget to set your clocks forward Sunday, March 10.
