Majority of Missouri tan salons allow preteens

A survey of tanning salon operators in Missouri shows that 65 percent would allow children as young as 10 to 12 years old to use tanning beds. That’s despite evidence that any tanning bed use increases the risk of all skin cancers, including melanoma. The survey was part of a study led by WUSTL dermatologists. Study co-author Lynn Cornelius, MD, says the survey should serve as a “wake-up call for parents.”

New device better traps viruses, airborne pathogens

WUSTL engineering researchers have created a new type of air-cleaning technology that could better protect human lungs from allergens, airborne viruses and ultrafine particles.  Traditional air cleaners can trap viruses in the filter, where they linger and grow. This device finds the virus, toxic particle or bioterror agent and inactivates it.

Three teams top Olin Sustainability Case Competition

Olin Business School’s fourth annual Olin Sustainability Case Competition challenged students to propose plans for developing more than 10,000 vacant properties in St. Louis. From solar panels to community service projects, students came up with creative ideas to combat “Blight, Plight and Urban Flight” in the City of St. Louis.

Jane Comfort and Company satirizes Barbie dolls, explores American notion of female beauty

It’s hard to wave when your elbow can’t bend. In Beauty, choreographer Jane Comfort deploys the robotic, stiff-jointed movements of Barbie and Ken dolls to withering satirical effect. On Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, Jane Comfort and Company will perform Beauty — and the BESSIE Award-winning Underground River — as part of the Edison Ovations Series.
