Genetic differences in hearts could lead
to personalized treatments

Healthy men and women show little difference in their hearts, except for small electrocardio- graphic disparities. But new genetic differences found in hearts with disease ultimately could lead to personalized treatment of various heart ailments, WUSTL researchers, led by Igor Efimov, right, have found.

A study of young twins in Malawi, in sub-Saharan Africa, finds that bacteria living in the intestine are an underlying cause of a form of severe acute childhood malnutrition.

Hydrogeologist questions reservoir releases, blasting rock to deepen Mississippi for barges

Coverage of the recent shipping crisis on the Mississippi River assumes the appropriate response to low water levels is to find an engineering solution. WUSTL hydrogeologist Robert E. Criss disagrees. He says the river has been over-engineered and that many of the engineering “solutions” are not economical if all costs, including those to the taxpayer and to the environment, are taken into account.

Historian to describe European encounters in the South Pacific??

Anthony Pagden, a European historian and political scientist at the University of California-Los Angeles, will deliver two public talks Feb. 6 and 7 for the Interdisciplinary Project in the Humanities. His talks are part of the Assembly Series.

Work, Families, Public Policy series begins Feb. 4

Faculty and graduate students with an interest in labor, households, health care, law and social welfare are invited to take part in a series of Monday brown-bag luncheon seminars to be held biweekly on the Danforth Campus beginning Monday, Feb. 4. The Work, Families and Public Policy series features one-hour presentations on research interests of faculty from local and national universities. Presentations will be from noon-1 p.m. in Seigle Hall, Room 348.
