Used Francis Field turf finds new life throughout St. Louis region

WUSTL, Teamsters Joint Council 13 and St. Louis Green partnered to help used artificial turf from Francis Field find a new life on playgrounds, parks and more throughout the region. The efforts are keeping about 1 million pounds of waste from landfills.

MacKeith named an honorary consul of Finland

Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has named Peter MacKeith its Honorary Consul for Missouri, in St. Louis. MacKeith, associate dean and associate professor of architecture in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has long worked to deepen cultural and educational relations between Finland and the United States.

WUSTL biologists help identify eastern gray squirrel as carrier of tick-borne diseases

A new assay that uses mitochondrial DNA that mutates faster than nuclear DNA has allowed scientists in the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences to identify one of the major animal reservoirs for tick-borne diseases in the southeastern United States. The animal turned out to be the eastern gray squirrel.

Heavy lifting at the School of Medicine

Workers prepare to place a new MRI scanner into the East Building at the School of Medicine June 11. The 18,000-pound scanner will be used for the Human Connectome Project, a research study that will trace the anatomical and functional connections between different regions of the brain’s gray matter.

Graduated driving laws reduce teen drunk driving

State laws that limit driving privileges for teens have reduced the incidence of drinking and driving among the nation’s youngest licensees, according to a new study from researchers at the School of Medicine. Teens comprise less than 5 percent of licensed drivers in the country, but they account for roughly 20 percent of motor vehicle crashes.

Staff members are invited to attend a joint information session for graduate evening programs at Olin Business School and the Sever Institute in the School of Engineering & Applied Science. The event takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 12, in the Danforth University Center, Room 276.
