Scientists in the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences have found a gene that seems to unleash the courtship ritual in male fruit flies. The study results appeared in a recent issue of PLoS Genetics.

Obituary: Permutt, renowned diabetes researcher

M. Alan Permutt, MD, professor of medicine and of cell biology and physiology at the School of Medicine, died of cancer June 10, 2012, in St. Louis. He was 72. Permutt was a faculty member since 1970 and one of the world’s leading diabetes researchers.

Steedman Fellowship winner announced

Architect Jason Mrdeza has won the 2012 Steedman Fellowship in Architecture International Design Competition. Sponsored by the Sam Fox School, the biennial competition is open to young architects worldwide and carries a $50,000 first place award to support study and research abroad.

Each spring, the dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences recognizes outstanding teaching assistants who have been nominated by a department or a program. This year, 18 graduate students received the 2011-12 Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

New Campus Card Services office opens June 19

The new Campus Card Services office is opening Tuesday, June 19, in Green Hall, Suite 1158. Beginning this summer, Campus Card Services will produce all new and replacement university IDs for Danforth Campus students, faculty, staff, contractors and vendors.

WUSTL finishes second in Directors’ Cup standings

The WUSTL athletics department finished second in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings. The second-place finish ties for highest in school history and is the Bears’ 10th consecutive top 10 appearance. Middlebury College captured its first Directors’ Cup with 1040.75 points, followed by WUSTL with 980.25 points and Williams College with 964.50 points.
