Folic acid may reduce some childhood cancers

Folic acid fortification of foods may reduce the incidence of the most common type of kidney cancer and a type of brain tumors in children, finds a new study by Kimberly J. Johnson, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School, and Amy Linabery, PhD, from the University of Minnesota.

Gloria Steinem visits women’s studies students

Gloria Steinem — a pioneering feminist, award-winning journalist and best-selling author — talks with students of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program in Arts & Sciences May 17. Steinem was at WUSTL to receive an honorary doctor of humane letters at Commencement. She also spoke at the Commencement ceremony at the Brown School.

IUDs, implants are most effective birth control

A study by Brooke Winner, MD (right), and Jeff Peipert, MD, to evaluate birth control methods has found dramatic differences in their effectiveness. Women who used birth control pills, the patch or vaginal ring were 20 times more likely to have an unintended pregnancy than those who used longer-acting forms such as an intrauterine device (IUD) or implant.

Olin student Justin Blau is on a mission. Blau, a finance major by day, is more widely known by his stage name, 3LAU. He plans to use his status as a rising star in the electronic music world to raise money for schools for underprivileged children in developing nations.

WUSTL Bike Smart Workshop

Led by Trailnet and hosted by the Office of Sustainability. Includes classroom instruction and hands-on and on-bike sessions from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Participants are responsible for bringing a bike in good working order. Registration $10, which includes a free multi-tool as well as lunch. Class open to WUSTL students, faculty and staff and limited to 10. Danforth University Center, Room 248. (314) 935-3454.

Welch memorial June 4

A memorial service in honor of Michael J. Welch, PhD, a faculty member for more than four decades, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 4, in Graham Chapel. Welch, who was professor of radiology, of chemistry, of biomedical engineering and of developmental biology, died May 6.

Track has strong showing at national championships

Senior Erica Jackey led five track team All-Americans at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 24-26 in Claremont, Calif. The women finished tied for sixth in the team standings — the second-highest finish in program history. The men tied for 77th.
