Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton will confer degrees at the 151st Commencement ceremony, which begins at 8:30 a.m. today in Brookings Quadrangle on the Danforth Campus. The 2,760 candidates will receive 2,878 degrees, of which 1,450 are undergraduate and 1,428 are graduate and professional.

Senior class president Alex Cooper views his time at WUSTL as truly “transformative.” When he takes the podium during Commencement, he will urge fellow graduating seniors to reflect back on their time at the university, paying special attention to the key relationships that have fostered growth.

Each year at Commencement, the WUSTL Record presents its annual Gallery of Outstanding Graduates. From among the more than 2,700 candidates, 12 are chosen who not only excel academically, but also stand out because of exceptional ability, volunteer involvement on campus or in the community, unique career choice, family background or unusual hobby or outside interests.

School of Medicine researchers have found evidence that early drug and alcohol use is associated with lower levels of educational achievement. They found that people who began drinking or using drugs as young teens or who became substance-dependent were less likely to finish college.

WUSTL’s entry in Formula SAE, a student competition to design and drive a Formula-style race car, was unveiled May 7. The car runs on E85 (a fuel blend with 85 percent ethanol) and is built of advanced composite materials and features pushbutton shifting. The Society of Automotive Engineers organizes the contest.

Organizers of the WUSTL Professional Leadership Academy & Network (PLAN) are looking for a second group of participants, including staff from the School of Medicine. PLAN is a yearlong professional development program intended to provide WUSTL with a cadre of leaders that can contribute to university-wide initiatives.
For the first time, a free Student Services Professional Development Conference is being offered to the entire WUSTL staff. Highlights include a keynote address by Jim Burmeister, director of Commencement, and breakout sessions with broad appeal.

The Bears are making their sixth-straight and ninth overall NCAA quarterfinal appearance. WUSTL (17-6) takes on No. 1 and defending national champion Amherst College (31-2) in the national quarterfinals Monday, May 21.
