Surgeons at the School of Medicine, led by Susan E. Mackinnon, MD, have restored some hand function in a quadriplegic patient with a spinal cord injury at the C7 vertebra, the lowest bone in the neck. Instead of operating on the spine itself, the surgeons rerouted working nerves in the upper arms.

Adrian “Addie” Smith, the Record’s Outstanding Graduate from the School of Law, has spent much of her life searching for the right spot to focus on building a brighter future for disadvantaged children. And she appears to have found it. After graduation May 18, she will become a lobbyist for Native American children.

The university’s “Alma Mater” is now played weekdays at noon from Graham Chapel, thanks to the efforts of rising sophomore Michael Byrne. This is just the first step in a plan to create a stronger sense of tradition on campus. Come graduation time, Byrne wants the song to resonate with the Class of 2015.

It was a night of glitz and glamour, as an audience of more than 200 gathered in Plaza Frontenac April 29 for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ 83rd annual Fashion Design Show. Leaving a Legacy featured dozens of students wearing scores of outfits by the Fashion Design Program’s nine seniors and 10 juniors.

Child abuse or neglect are strong predictors of major health and emotional problems, but little is known about how the chronicity of the maltreatment may increase future harm apart from other risk factors in a child’s life. The study, led by Melissa Jonson-Reid, PhD, child welfare expert and a professor at the Brown School, is published in the journal Pediatrics.
