Commencement week begins today with a variety of celebrations and ceremonies designed to warmly send the Class of 2012 out into the world. The week begins with the Chancellor’s Dinner to Honor Graduating Seniors at 6 p.m. tonight, and culminates with the 151st Commencement Friday, May 18.

Olin Dean Mahendra R. Gupta, PhD, speaks at the groundbreaking ceremony May 7 for two new buildings — Knight Hall and Bauer Hall — that will aid the growth of graduate business education programs. To help that growth, Emerson Charitable Trust donated $3 million for an auditorium that will be located on the first floor of Knight Hall.

Mara MacMahon, the Record’s Outstanding Graduate in Art from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, will graduate May 18 with degrees in biology in Arts & Sciences and fine arts in communication design. She hopes to take her knowledge of biology and computer animation design straight to the film industry.

Researchers at the School of Medicine have developed a genetic test that can accurately predict whether the most common form of eye cancer will spread to other parts of the body, particularly the liver. The test successfully classified tumors more than 97 percent of the time.

The Sam Fox School’s College of Art and University Libraries hosted the 15th annual open house of the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Studio for the Illustrated Book May 1 in Walker Hall. Students displayed their work from the academic year and competed for the Nancy Award, which recognizes outstanding student achievement in book design.

The second annual Lavender Recognition Ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, in College Hall in the South 40 House. Co-hosted by LGBT Student Involvement and Leadership and the Social Justice Center, the ceremony honors the achievements and contributions of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students and their allies.
