Staff, faculty, students challenged to go ‘car-free’

Faculty, staff and students commuting to campus are encouraged to leave their sedans, SUVs and minivans in the garage and go “car-free” April 16-27 as part of the university’s Car-Free Challenge. The challenge invites teams of individuals to try alternative means of transportation, track progress in calories-burned and CO2-saved, and benchmark against other teams.

‘Crazy’ offshoots of Einstein’s theories topic of McDonnell lecture

Clifford M. Will, PhD, the James S. McDonnell Professor of Space Sciences in Arts & Sciences, will deliver the McDonnell Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in Whitaker Hall, Room 100. Will plans to discuss “Black Holes, Waves of Gravity and Other Warped Ideas of Dr. Einstein.”

Weltin Lecture in Religious Studies Monday

Virginia Burrus, PhD, professor of early church history and chair of the Graduate Division of Religion at Drew University in Madison, N.J., will give the Weltin Lecture in Religious Studies in Arts & Sciences Monday, April 9. Her lecture will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge.

‘CarFit’ event promotes safety for older drivers

Students in the Program in Occupational Therapy worked with area drivers during a ‘CarFit’ event March 31 at the School of Medicine. During the event, the students evaluated older drivers to make sure they fit inside their vehicles properly for maximum safety. Correct fit is assessed through a 12-point checklist.

Students wage Olympic battle

Students competed in tug-of-war during the 2012 Residential College Olympics March 31 on the South 40. This popular, annual event pits residential colleges against each other in a day filled with fun activities. This year, Park/Mudd Residential College took first place overall.

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service invites students, faculty and staff to apply for the Civic Engagement Fund, which awards grants to support service trips, civic initiatives or community service projects. The first deadline for the upcoming funding rounds is April 13.

Women’s golf team ties for first at spring invitational

The No. 2 women’s golf team fired a two-day total score of 611 (304-307) to tie for first place at the inaugural WUSTL Spring Invitational March 31-April 1 at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Ill. The team returns to action Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15, at the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling in Normal, Ill.
