With the rising cost of filing for bankruptcy, many cash-strapped American families are using tax rebates to pay for it, finds a new study by Jialan Wang, PhD, assistant professor of finance at Olin. The study is published as a National Bureau of Economic Research working paper by Wang and colleagues at Columbia University and the University of Chicago.

For Lewis Wall, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the School of Medicine, a 20-year dream came true when a 42-bed hospital opened in Niger, Africa, in February. The facility is dedicated to repairing fistulas, wounds inflicted by prolonged labor and delivery.

Arts & Sciences recognized the achievements of six alumni during the 15th Annual Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony, held March 22 at the Crowne Plaza Clayton. Five alumni received the Distinguished Alumni Award and Robert L. Virgil, (MBA ’60, DBA ’67, honorary doctor of laws ’09), dean emeritus of Olin Business School and a WUSTL emeritus trustee, received the Dean’s Medal.

The final blood drive for the academic year takes place today, April 4, at a variety of locations and times. All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to participate in this effort to replenish the region’s blood supply. Each WUSTL blood drive collects approximately 400 units of blood, which save 1,200 lives.

The women’s track team finished third out of 28 teams, and the men placed fourth out of 32 in the Washington University Invitational March 31 and April 1 at Bushyhead Track. Sophomore Anna Etherington (pole vault) and freshman Lucy Cheadle (5,000-meter run) each won individual titles.
