Mecham, Morrow-Howell to receive 2012 faculty achievement awards

Robert Mecham, PhD, a pioneering cell biologist, and Nancy Morrow-Howell, PhD, a leading national scholar in gerontology, will receive WUSTL’s 2012 faculty achievement awards, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton announced. Mecham is receiving the Carl and Gerty Cori Faculty Achievement Award, and Morrow-Howell is receiving the Arthur Holly Compton Faculty Achievement Award. They will receive their awards and give presentations of their scholarly work during a ceremony in December.

PLAN for your career — applications now being accepted

The PLAN worked, and now organizers of the WUSTL Professional Leadership Academy & Network program are looking for a second group of participants. PLAN is a yearlong professional development program intended to cultivate future leaders who can contribute to university-wide initiatives and projects.

Bear Cub grants support innovative research

WUSTL has awarded five Bear Cub fund grants totaling $190,000 to support innovative research that has shown commercial potential. Jerry Morrissey, PhD (right), received one of the grants to develop rapid tests for the early detection of kidney cancer.

Math students excel in Putnam competition 

The Department of Mathematics in Arts & Sciences has announced that a WUSTL team, consisting of senior Alex Anderson and juniors Tom Morrell and Ari Tenzer, placed 28th out of 460 teams in the demanding William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. Two WUSTL teams also took first and third place in the 17th annual Missouri Collegiate Mathematics Competition.

Law school presents Distinguished Alumni Awards, Dean’s Medal

The School of Law celebrated the outstanding achievements of seven individuals at the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner April 20. Four alumni received Distinguished Law Alumni Awards; two received Distinguished Young Law Alumni Awards; and one received the Dean’s Medal.

The Washington University Neurofibromatosis Center will host its first research symposium May 4. The event will focus on clinical and basic science research on neurofibromatosis 1, an inherited condition that increases risk of brain tumors in children and adults.

Women’s tennis splits matches

The No. 11 women’s tennis team earned a 9-0 sweep of Webster University as head coach Kelly Stahlhuth earned her 100th career victory April 17. The Bears (13-6) travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete at the University Athletic Association Championship today through Sunday, April 27-29.
