Elgin, Templeton elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Two WUSTL professors have been elected fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The new fellows are Sarah C.R. Elgin, PhD, the Viktor Hamburger Professor of Arts & Sciences, and Alan R. Templeton, PhD, the Charles Rebstock Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences.

Alzheimer’s plaques disrupt brain networks

Scientists studying the way Alzheimer’s disease takes root in the brain have identified important similarities between a mouse model and human Alzheimer’s. School of Medicine researchers have shown that brain plaques in mice are associated with disruption of the ability of brain regions to network with each other.

Nobel Laureate Ciechanover to speak Friday

Aaron Ciechanover, MD, PhD, co-recipient of the 2004 Nobel Prize in chemistry and the Distinguished Research Professor at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, will give a special seminar Friday, April 27. His lecture, “The Ubiquitin Proteolytic System: From Basic Mechanisms Through Human Diseases and on to Drug Development,” will take place at 4 p.m. in the Laboratory Sciences Building, Room 300.

Washington University Opera April 24 and 26

Take three parts standard operatic repertoire, add two contemporary masterpieces, one not-so-standard bel canto and a dash of musical theater. The result is Opera Scenes, the semester-end program by Washington University Opera. Performances, directed by Tim Ocel, are at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, April 24 and 26, in the 560 Music Center.

McBride named NRHA’s outstanding researcher

The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) honored Timothy D. McBride, PhD, associate dean for public health at the Brown School, with its Outstanding Researcher Award April 19 during the NRHA’s 35th annual Rural Health Conference.

Burton M. Wheeler memorial set for tomorrow

A memorial for Burton M. Wheeler, PhD, will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall. Wheeler, longtime teacher and former dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, died Friday, Feb. 17, after a long battle with cancer. A reception will immediately follow.

Softball has busy weekend with Senior Day, two doubleheaders, fundraiser

The softball team celebrated Senior Day and raised money for cancer research during its “Bear Ball Beats Cancer” doubleheader this past Saturday against Monmouth College. The team then had a second doubleheader Sunday vs. Blackburn College. To find out how the softball team and other WUSTL teams fared this weekend, visit bearsports.wustl.edu.
