Six to receive honorary degrees at 151st Commencement ceremony

WUSTL will award six honorary degrees during the 151st Commencement May 18. The recipients are: David M. Becker, JD; C. Ronald Kahn, MD; Richard J. Mahoney; Mike Peters; Gloria M. Steinem; and Donald M. Suggs, DDS. During the ceremony, WUSTL also will bestow academic degrees on approximately 2,800 members of the Class of 2012.

Football team rallies students to break world record for longest massage chain

WUSTL is getting ready to reclaim the Guinness world record for longest massage chain Tuesday, April 24. Graduating seniors first set the record in 2010 before a group in Thailand broke it. Now, the WUSTL football team is hoping to gather 2,000 people on Francis Field — all in an effort to raise awareness about teen suicide.?

First gene linked to common form of psoriasis identified

Scientists have identified the first gene directly linked to the most common form of psoriasis, a chronic skin condition. The research shows that rare mutations in the CARD14 gene, when activated by an environmental trigger, can lead to plaque psoriasis. This type of psoriasis accounts for 80 percent of all cases.

New Olin-developed R&D tool could add $1 trillion to public firms’ market value

The nation’s top 20 publicly traded firms could have added nearly $1 trillion to their market value if, in 2010, they had used a new tool, known as the research quotient (RQ), to determine their research and development (R&D) budgets, says its creator, Anne Marie Knott, PhD, associate professor of strategy.

96 Minutes by alumna Aimee Lagos comes to campus

Now a film director based in Los Angeles, alumna Aimee Lagos will return to campus Monday, April 23, for a free screening of 96 Minutes, her feature-length debut. Inspired by true events, the film portrays four teenagers from two different worlds — until those worlds collide in the course of a carjacking.

Rides, game booths, fun food and family-friendly theatrical productions. Carnival continues until 8 p.m. tonight and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free, though tickets must be purchased for rides and some plays with cash only (ATMs on site). Ride tickets are $1 each or 20 tickets for $17. Proceeds benefit Guardian Angels Settlement. In front of Brookings Hall. Thurtene.org.

Burton Wheeler memorial set for Tuesday

A memorial for Burton M. Wheeler, PhD, will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall. A reception will follow. Wheeler, professor emeritus of English and of religious studies, both in Arts & Sciences, and a beloved teacher and former dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, died Friday, Feb. 17, after a long battle with cancer.

Women’s golf finishes sixth at Spring Fling

The No. 2 women’s golf team placed sixth at the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling April 14 and 15 at the Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill. WUSTL concludes regular-season play at the University of Illinois-Springfield Shootout Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, in Springfield, Ill.
