The Office’s Ellie Kemper visits WUSTL April 26

Actress, writer and comedienne Ellie Kemper, best known for her supporting role as Erin Hannon in NBC’s The Office, will deliver the annual Women’s Society Adele Starbird Lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, describing her rise in Hollywood. The talk, free and open to the public, will be held in Graham Chapel.

Relay for Life: A poignant tribute to McLeod?

WUSTL dedicated the 10th annual Relay for Life to Dean James E. McLeod, who died Sept. 5, 2011, after a two-year battle with cancer. Luminary candles — each bearing the name of an individual who has battled cancer — illuminated Bushyhead Track. McLeod’s daughter, Sara, read the speech given by her father at last year’s opening ceremony.

Can behavior be controlled by genes? The case of honeybee work assignments

In an article published in the advance online edition of Genes, Brain and Behavior, WUSTL biologist Yehuda Ben-Shahar and colleagues demonstrate that the division of labor among honeybees is correlated with the presence in their brains of tiny snippets of noncoding RNA, called micro-RNAs, or miRNAs, that suppress the expression of genes.

Combination treatment in mice shows promise for fatal neurological disorder in kids

Batten disease is a rare but fatal neurological disorder that typically strikes young children. Working with mice, scientists at the School of Medicine have discovered dramatic improvements in life span and motor function by treating the animals with gene therapy and bone marrow transplantation.

Paul Dowkontt (left) of the Department of Physics in Arts & Sciences is congratulated by Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton April 11 in recognition of his 25 years of service to WUSTL at the 25th Anniversary Reception. Dowkontt was among 108 honored at the annual event.

Children’s art contest winners on display through April 25

Artwork created by the children of WUSTL employees is on display through Wednesday, April 25, in the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center Atrium. The creations were part of a contest offered to children in kindergarten through high school to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable living.

Softball team sweeps doubleheaders

The softball team remained in the hunt for an NCAA playoff bid with a pair of doubleheader sweeps at Principia College April 10 and at Webster University April 15. The Bears (22-10) begin a four-game homestand against Millikin University at 4 p.m. tomorrow, April 19.
