Soweto Gospel Choir brings ‘Grace’ to Edison

A lone tenor takes the stage singing Jesu Ngowethu, a traditional Zulu spiritual. So begins African Grace, the new program by the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir. At 8 p.m. Friday, March 23, the ensemble returns to WUSTL for Edison’s Ovations Series.

Altered gene linked to fatal neuroblastoma in adolescents, young adults

Researchers, including Richard Wilson, PhD, director of The Genome Institute, have identified the first gene mutation associated with a chronic and often fatal form of neuroblastoma that typically strikes adolescents and young adults. The finding provides the first clue about the poorly understood link between treatment outcome and age at diagnosis.

McCarthy installed as Spencer T. Olin professor

Mathematician John E. McCarthy, PhD, was installed March 2 as the Spencer T. Olin Professor in Arts & Sciences in a ceremony in Holmes Lounge.  Following the installation and the presentation of the professorship medallion, McCarthy spoke on “Why Pure Mathematics Matters.”

Study looks at discrimination’s impact on smoking

Smoking, the leading preventable cause of mortality in the United States, continues to disproportionately impact lower-income members of racial and ethnic minority groups. In a new study, Jason Q. Purnell, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School, looks at how perceived discrimination influences smoking rates among these groups.

Sociologist William Julius Wilson to speak for Assembly Series

William Julius Wilson, PhD, the Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor at Harvard University, will present this year’s Chancellor’s Fellows Lecture, “Race and Affirmative Opportunity in the Barack Obama Era” at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, in Graham Chapel for the Assembly Series. His talk is free and open to the public.

Baseball finishes second in spring break tournament

The baseball team won its first five games of its spring break University Athletic Association Championship tournament in Sanford, Fla., before dropping its final three to finish second. The Bears (12-6) open an 11-game homestand at 3 p.m. today against Webster University.
