Scientists map genetic evolution of leukemia

By mapping the evolution of cancer cells in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes who later died of leukemia, Timothy Graubert (left), Matthew Walter and WUSTL colleagues have found clues suggesting cancer drugs should be aimed at mutations that develop early in the disease.

Pilot program results in significant energy savings

The Danforth Campus Green Labs Initiative in Brauer Hall, held this past fall, ended with significant savings in carbon emissions and money, announced the Office of Sustainability. The program, modeled after a similar initiative at the School of Medicine, aims to spread energy awareness and conservation among the 850 labs on the Danforth Campus.

Acclaimed novelist Joy Williams to read March 21

Fiction writer Joy Williams will read from her work Wednesday, March 21, for The Writing Program in Arts & Sciences. Her fourth novel, The Quick and the Dead, was nominated for the 2001 Pulitzer Prize. Williams is author of the novels State of Grace (1973) — a finalist for the National Book Award — The Changeling (1978) and Breaking and Entering (1988).

Film festival showcases African continent, people

The annual African Film Festival at WUSTL begins Friday, March 23, in Brown Hall. Over the course of three days, eight films will showcase the African continent and its people. During a youth matinee, award-winning director, writer and animator Cilia Sawadogo will answer audience questions about her film.

Conference to explore youth justice

Experts on youth advocacy and school desegregation will come together March 22 and 23 for a series of events as part of the Youth Justice Program at the School of Law. Events are free and open to the public and will be held in the Bryan Cave Courtroom of Anheuser-Busch Hall, Room 310.

Softball team finishes second in UAA tourney

The No. 21 softball team posted a 4-4 record and tied for second at the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship tournament held March 13-17 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The team begins an eight-game homestand with a pair of games Saturday, March 24.
