Revisiting 1968: Mini-colloquium to address turbulent decade’s most turbulent year

Todd Gitlin, PhD, noted 1960s cultural scholar and book author, will visit WUSTL Wednesday and Thursday, March 28 and 29, to keynote a two-day mini-colloquium exploring the counter-cultural movements of the year 1968. Special focus will be on the literary, social, political and artistic theories spawned by these movements.

The National Weather Service has named WUSTL the 104th national StormReady University. The designation recognizes communities — schools, cities and businesses — that take measures to ensure they are prepared for a severe-weather emergency.

Lifestyle changes for obese patients linked to modest weight loss

A program that helps obese patients maintain healthy lifestyle changes is associated with modest weight loss and improved blood pressure control in a high-risk, low-income group, according to Graham A. Colditz, MD, DrPH, at the School of Medicine.

Lynn to speak on separation of church and state

Barry W. Lynn, JD, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, will present, “It’s Religion, Stupid, Not the Economy” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in the Knight Center. The lecture, free and open to the public, is the Thomas Hennings Lecture co-sponsored by the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics and the Assembly Series.

Green Cup winners: Sustainability students

Students accept the Green Cup award on behalf of their team members at the Green Cup Awards ceremony March 7 at Ursa’s Fireside on the South 40. The Green Cup recognized the South 40 residential college, North Side team and fraternity that reduced its energy use by the highest percentage during the four-week competition, which ended Feb. 29.

WUSTL will test its new emergency communication methods at 12:15 p.m. today, March 14. The systems tested include Alertus beacons; desktop pop-ups on computers that have the software installed; Danforth Campus outdoor warning sirens; indoor public address systems; and more.

Baseball team on a tear

After starting the season with three straight losses, the baseball team earned its ninth consecutive win in Sanford, Fla., pounding out 10 hits in a 14-2 win over Brandeis University March 12. The victory improved the team’s record to 9-3 overall. The nine-game winning streak is the longest for the Bears since 2007.
