Olin MBA student could hike into history

Olin MBA student Mike McLaughlin, who was emotionally and physically abused as a child, wants to walk into history for charity by becoming the first person to through-hike the Appalachian and Ozark trails back-to-back. A hike kick-off event takes place at noon Friday, Feb. 24, in Simon Hall’s May Auditorium.

WUSTL Symphony Orchestra to perform Wagner, Rachmaninov Friday

 At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, the Washington University Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ward Stare will perform Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, written for his wife, Cosima (right), along with Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2, in the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

Bone marrow drive on campus Feb. 29

Ten thousand people with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell and other life-threatening diseases need a bone marrow transplant to survive. Donors with diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds are especially needed. The student group WU Marrow Registry is conducting an on-campus registry drive at four locations on the Danforth Campus Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Lenke named chief of spine surgery

Lawrence G. Lenke, MD, has been appointed chief of spinal surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the School of Medicine. He succeeds Keith H. Bridwell, MD, head of the spine service for the past 28 years.

Obituary: Wheeler, longtime faculty member, former dean

Burton M. Wheeler, PhD, professor emeritus of English and of religious studies, both in Arts & Sciences, and a beloved teacher and former dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, died Friday, Feb. 17, at his home in Warson Woods, Mo., after a long battle with cancer. He would have turned 85 March 12.

Track teams sweep meet at Illinois College

The men’s and women’s track & field teams combined to win 11 events and sweep the team titles at the Illinois College Alumni Classic Feb. 17. The women’s distance medley relay team clocked a time of 11:46.38 to win the event and break the previous school record of 11:48.98 set in 2011. Both teams travel to New York Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26, for the University Athletic Association Indoor Championships at New York University.
