Last year, the NCAA required all aluminum bats in college play to meet a new standard designed to limit the exit speed of the ball off the bat. This year, high schools are implementing the new bats. With spring training beginning at all levels this month, a WUSTL professor and baseball coaches comment on the new bats and how they have affected play.

Pat Hollinger, a junior majoring in philosophy in Arts & Sciences, placed first out of 10 poets who performed Feb. 17 during the the Fourth Annual Poetry Grand Slam in Edison Theatre. Scientists at the School of Medicine are using a new imaging device that simultaneously performs positron-emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans, producing more detailed images. The scanner’s versatility will enable many new applications in areas ranging from cancer to neurological disorders to heart and lung disease.

Children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can benefit from medication for related disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but there is a poor understanding of medication use, says Paul T. Shattuck, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School. A new study compares medication use of individuals with an ASD, ADHD and both an ASD with ADHD.

The No. 12 women’s basketball team last weekend earned two key road victories — over Brandeis University and New York Universitiy — to clinch second place in the University Athletic Association. The team travels to the University of Chicago Saturday, Feb. 25, to finish out the regular season.
