Brain differences seen at 6 months in infants who develop autism

Researchers at the School of Medicine have found significant differences in brain development in infants as young as 6 months who later develop autism. The new research suggests that autism doesn’t appear abruptly, but instead develops over time during infancy.

New national poll to measure shifts in attitudes

The American public exhibits deep partisan divisions about the direction that federal fiscal policy should take, finds a new national survey from the Weidenbaum Center. The American Panel Survey will take place monthly, and aims to measure shifts in attitudes over time.

Jazz at Holmes: Williams plays Herbie Hancock

At 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, WUSTL’s Jazz at Holmes series will pay tribute to musical legend Herbie Hancock with an evening of his music performed by St. Louis’ own Ptah Williams. Now in its 13th year, the series will present free concerts by local and nationally known jazz musicians most Thursday nights throughout the spring.

Poet Gizzi to read for Writing Program Thursday

Peter Gizzi, the Visiting Hurst Professor of Poetry, will read from his work Thursday, Feb. 23, as part of The Writing Program in Arts & Sciences’ spring Reading Series. Gizzi’s poetry practically vibrates with tensions — between the lyrical and the abstract, joy and grief, interior and exterior.

Work & Livable Lives Conference Feb. 27 and 28

WUSTL will host the “Work & Livable Lives Conference” Feb. 27 and 28 to address current employment-related challenges and how they limit the ability of U.S. households to lead secure and stable lives, raise children successfully and contribute to the community.  The conference will include panels on household financial fragility, measurement of economic security, the American Dream, labor and employment policy, and health policy and employment.

Washington University Libraries is offering a series of free workshops the last Thursday of the month in February, March and April to help WUSTL community members explore how they can productively use the social media tool Twitter. Men’s basketball clinches NCAA bid with win over NYU

A 74-58 win over New York University Feb. 19 clinched the University Athletic Association league title and secured an NCAA Division III tournament bid. The Bears, who have one regular-season game remaining at the University of Chicago Saturday, will be making their 19th overall NCAA tournament appearance and 16th in Division III.
