George Washington Week celebrates namesake

The annual George Washington Week, sponsored by the sophomore honorary Lock & Chain, kicks off today, President’s Day. This year’s theme is “Who is WU?” Carriage rides, keynote speakers, community service and silent auctions all are being organized with a focus on diversity and heritage on the WUSTL campus and in the greater St. Louis-area community.

Protein may play role in obesity, diabetes, aging

Researchers at the School of Medicine, led by Philip Stahl, PhD, have identified a potent regulator of sensitivity to insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar levels. The findings may help scientists find better treatments for type 2 diabetes, obesity and other health problems caused by a body’s inability to properly regulate blood sugar.

Comedy troupe The Water Coolers takes on
office culture

Do you understand what the IT guy is talking about? Neither do The Water Coolers. Like  Seinfeld set to music, or a Dilbert cartoon sprung to life, this sketch comedy troupe both celebrates and eviscerates modern corporate culture in all its fast-talking, slow-moving absurdity. The show, part of Edison’s Ovations Series, is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.

Deanne Bell, a WUSTL alumna and host of popular science and technology-themed television shows, will share her love for a profession that she finds fun, creative and critical to innovation, in an Assembly Series/Engineering Week presentation at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.

Obituary: Kunkler, Focal Spot magazine editor, 64

Vicki Kunkler, director of publications and communications at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at the School of Medicine, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, of cancer. She was 64.

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams were on the road this past weekend, with games at Brandeis University Feb. 17 and at New York University yesterday.
