Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) tend to be preoccupied with screen-based media. A new study by Paul Shattuck, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School, looks at how children with ASDs spend their screen time.

Improvisational dancer Simson performs Feb. 7

Described as “a force of nature” by The New York Times, dancer Kirstie Simson is internationally renowned for creating virtuoso improvisational performances. On Tuesday, Feb. 7, Simson — the 2012 Marcus Artist in Arts & Sciences — will present a free, informal concert in the Annelise Mertz Dance Studio.

YouthBridge SEIC finalists named

Nine finalists were selected to compete for more than $125,000 in grants at the 2011-12 YouthBridge Social Enterprise and Innovation Competition (SEIC). The venture is a joint partnership between the YouthBridge Community Foundation and the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Awards will be announced in April.

Moynier awarded young scientist honors

Frédéric Moynier, PhD, 33, assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences in Arts & Sciences and a member of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, has been named the recipient of the 2012 Houtermans Award and the Nier Prize, both given for exceptional work by a scientist younger than 35.

Acid reflux treatment does not improve asthma in children

Research by asthma specialists nationwide — including Leonard B. Bacharier, MD (right), and Mario Castro, MD, at the School of Medicine — find that adding prescription acid controllers to standard inhaled steroid treatment does not improve asthma symptoms or control of the condition in children.

Women’s track team wins invitational; men fourth

The women’s track and field team won the team title, while the WUSTL men finished fourth at the Rose-Hulman Engineer Invitational Jan. 28. Senior Erica Jackey (mile) and sophomore Jasmine Williams (long jump) each set meet records to lead the women to the title. Both teams return to action Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Bob Keck Invitational in Bloomington, Ill.
