Antibiotics ineffective for most sinus infections

Antibiotics typically prescribed for sinus infections do not reduce symptoms any better than an inactive placebo, says Jay F. Piccirillo, MD, and his co-investigators at the School of Medicine. Instead, researchers suggest treating symptoms, such as pain, cough and congestion, along with watchful waiting to see whether further treatment is necessary.

A winning idea: Sustainable campus landscaping

A proposal by two WUSTL students to introduce turf reduction, large bio-swales, more cisterns and even sheep “lawnmowers” to campus as part of a plan to make landscaping more sustainable at the university won the $5,000 first prize in the annual Olin Sustainability Case Competition.

Democracy with an open heart

Hundreds braved an arctic chill the evening of Feb. 10 to experience the warmth inside Graham Chapel generated by Parker Palmer, best-selling author and educator, and singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer, who delivered a unique message of practicing democracy with an open heart. The event was the opening of the spring 2011 Assembly Series.

Military service changes personality, study says

It’s no secret battlefield trauma can leave veterans with deep emotional scars. But new research suggests that military service, even without combat, has a subtle lingering effect on one’s personality, making it potentially more difficult for veterans to get along with friends, family and co-workers.

Spring conference to study ‘new science’ and an 18th-century pope

A three-day international conference is devoted to the lifework and 18-year papacy of “The Enlightenment Pope,” Benedict XIV. He  believed in the alliance between faith and “new science,” even urging church parishioners to donate bodies of the deceased for medical dissection. The conference will take place April 30-May 2.

Men’s basketball improves to 17-5

The men’s basketball team improved its overall record to 17-5 with a pair of home victories last weekend. The Bears held on to sole possession of first place in the University Athletic Association with a 78-60 win over Case Western Reserve University Feb. 10. The team then celebrated Senior Day Feb. 13 with an 88-79 victory over Carnegie Mellon University.
