Spring Assembly Series: Mind, body, heart and soul

The spring 2012 Assembly Series begins Friday, Feb. 10, with acclaimed author and educator Parker Palmer. An underlying theme for many of the speakers this semester is the inherent human need to connect mind and body with heart and soul, whether it be through music, humor, creativity or fun.

RecycleMania 2012 kicks off this weekend

RecycleMania, which pits WUSTL against other U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities to see which campus can keep the greatest amount of waste materials out of landfills, begins Sunday, Feb. 5. Last year, WUSTL recycled approximately 278.3 tons of waste during the contest for a top 5-percent finish.

Tyson leading effort to restore Ozark glades

A giant experiment, led by Tiffany Knight, PhD, associate professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, is under way at Tyson Research Center that will test three different variables in 32 glades with the goal of establishing best practices for restoring not just degraded glade habitats but degraded ecosystems in general. Collaborating scientists locally and from around the world will participate.

Medical students show artistic side

Second-year students at the School of Medicine discuss the painting “The Last Supper” by Andrew Loza, an MD/PhD student. The painting is one of many pieces of art done by faculty, staff and students at the School of Medicine on display through Feb. 17 in the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center Atrium.

Panel to explore St. Louis public health

Public health in St. Louis is the first social issue to be explored during “St. Louis Up Close,” a new series featuring casual conversations with local nonprofit leaders. Five more discussions are planned for the series, sponsored by the Gephardt Institute for Public Service and the Community Service Office. All talks are free and open to the public.

Women’s basketball splits UAA games

The No. 7 women’s basketball team split a pair of University Athletic Association (UAA) games last weekend. The team suffered its third loss Jan. 27 to No. 5 University of Rochester. Two days later, WUSTL held off a tough Emory University team in an 83-80 overtime win. The women take to the road to play the same two teams this weekend, at Rochester Friday, Feb. 3, and at Emory Sunday, Feb. 5.
