Last year’s hit Super Bowl ad, a Volkswagen spot featuring a boy dressed as Darth Vader, was unique in that it was released before the game. This week, nearly all ad agencies are expected to run online commercial previews before Sunday’s Super Bowl, leading Olin Business School’s Seethu Seetharaman, PhD, to question the wisdom of running TV ads at all.

School-age children whose mothers nurtured them early in life have brains with a larger hippocampus, a key structure important to learning, memory and response to stress. The new research, by child psychiatrists and neuroscientists at the School of Medicine, is the first to show that changes in this key part of a child’s brain are linked to a mother’s nurturing.

Edison Theatre has received a prestigious Challenge America Fast-Track grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). A repeat recipient in the Challenge America category, Edison will use the $10,000 award to support Algo Nuevo (Something New), a series of free activities to be held this March exploring the history and aesthetics of Hispanic dance.

Sarah Gehlert, PhD, the E. Desmond Lee Professor of Racial and Ethnic Diversity at the Brown School, was recently appointed senior fellow of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR). In her role, Gehlert will represent social work research to federal agencies and policy makers.

White Distinguished Service Award. The Gloria White award recognizes a staff member for his or her exceptional effort and contributions that result in the betterment of the university. PB&Joy, the university-wide food drive, will be held again in April, and all faculty, staff and students are invited to join in the planning for this worthwhile event. Meetings begin Thursday, Feb. 2, in the Danforth University Center. Last year’s drive yielded three tons of food for area people in need.

Senior guard Dylan Richter averaged 28 points per game as the men’s basketball team picked up two big wins over University Athletic Association (UAA) foes last weekend and found itself in first place in the conference standings. The Bears defeated the University of Rochester 83-78 Jan. 27 and Emory University 99-88 Jan. 29.
