More eating, studying areas debut at DUC

In response to requests for additional eating and working space in the Danforth University Center, a 900-square-foot area recently underwent renovation. The new space — with an informal meeting room, more seating, tables and electrical outlets — opens this week.

1.3 billion steps in 100 days

Between Sept. 28, 2011, and Jan. 5, 2012, School of Medicine employees walked to the moon and back, then around the equator 10 times. That adds up to nearly 1.3 billion steps walked in the 100-day Tread the Med “Be A Walk Star” walking campaign. ??

DUC Chamber Music Series opens Jan. 31

The husband-and-wife team of Roger Kaza, principal horn of the St. Louis Symphony, and pianist Patti Wolf (right) will launch the Danforth University Center’s spring Chamber Music Series with a free performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31. The performance is the first of five scheduled for the spring semester.

Presolar Grain Workshop returns to WUSTL

The Presolar Grain Workshop, which gathers scientists who study tiny bits of stars that were born and died billions of years ago, is returning to WUSTL. Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, and continue through the weekend in Crow and Compton halls. Attendees include 45 astrophysicists from WUSTL and research institutions from around the world.

Candace A. Ellison, financial adviser for Wells Fargo, was a presenter at the sixth annual “Financial Freedom Seminar: Making Your Money Work for You Jan. 21 in Brown Hall. The seminar — hosted by the Society of Black Student Social Workers at the Brown School — brought together financial experts and St. Louis community members.

Basketball bringing cancer awareness to court

This Friday, the men’s basketball team will participate in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer week. The event includes a marrow registry drive, where students, faculty and staff can sign up to become a member of the National Bone Marrow Registry.
