Schaal to become next dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences

Provost Edward S. Macias, PhD, has announced that Barbara A. Schaal, PhD, the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences, will become the next dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, effective Jan. 1, 2013. Schaal succeeds Gary S. Wihl, PhD, the Hortense & Tobias Lewin Distinguished Professor in the Humanities in Arts & Sciences, who will be on leave beginning Jan. 1, 2013.

St. Louis Summit to bring together regional social service sector

Health and human services organizations and programs are in constant growth and movement, and the need to effectively evaluate the impact of those initiatives in the community is greater than ever. The Brown School, with the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and the Rome Group, will present “Evaluation for Social Impact” Oct. 16 and 17 at Nine Network studios.?

Alvin Ailey Legacy Residency begins Sept. 30

In 1958, Alvin Ailey and a small group of dancers staged a performance at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. The concert helped revolutionize perceptions of African-American dancers and led to the founding of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Sylvia Waters, a former principal dancer with the company, will be on campus as part of the Alvin Ailey Legacy Residency hosted by the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences.

Memorial service scheduled Sunday for Gabby Reuveni

A memorial service will be held at noon Sunday, Sept. 30, for Gabrielle “Gabby” Reuveni. Reuveni, 20, was a rising junior from Paramus, N.J., who died Saturday, July 14. The service will take place in the 560 Music Center, 560 Trinity Ave.

Second chance for Service First: volunteers needed

About 150 volunteers still are needed this weekend for Service First. Through this annual WUSTL community service project, student, staff and faculty volunteers brighten public schools in St. Louis City and University City. Originally set for Sept. 1, Service First was rescheduled due to weather.
