WUSTL selected to host Clinton Global Initiative University April 5-7

Chelsea Clinton announced at the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York that WUSTL will serve as the host of the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), April 5-7, 2013, on the Danforth Campus. President Bill Clinton launched CGI U in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world. Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting where students, youth organizations, topic experts and celebrities discuss solutions to pressing global issues.

Ervin Scholars celebrate and reflect on program’s past 25 years

Clara McLeod (right) greets Jane Ervin, the widow of John B. Ervin, after Ervin spoke at the Ervin Scholars Program 25th Anniversary Celebration Banquet, held Sept. 15 at St. Louis Union Station Marriott. McLeod’s husband, the late James E. McLeod, founded the program in 1987 to pay tribute to WUSTL’s first African-American dean, John B. Ervin, PhD.

‘Freedom Writers’ teacher shares personal story
of transforming lives

Teacher Erin Gruwell’s story of transforming students who were labeled stupid and apathetic into confident, motivated high school graduates became an inspirational best-selling book and movie. Gruwell will discuss “Becoming a Catalyst for Change” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in Anheuser-Busch Hall. Part of the Assembly Series, the talk is free and open to the public.

Dacey to be ‘Honored Guest’ at Congress
of Neurological Surgeons?

Ralph G. Dacey Jr., MD, the Henry G. and Edith R. Schwartz Professor and head of the Department of Neurosurgery, will be the “Honored Guest” at the annual meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Football team defeats Kenyon College

The football team defeated Kenyon College 28-23 Sept. 23 to pick up its first win of the season. WUSTL (1-3) plays its second road game Saturday, Sept. 29, at DePauw University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Greencastle, Ind.
