WUSTL engineers will be working on low-cost solar cells and systems that integrate solar cells with batteries as part of a $125 million U.S.-India Initiative for Clean Energy. The technology is designed to help India leapfrog energy technologies, moving directly to low-emission electricity generation and bypassing fossil-fuel electrical generation as much as possible.

A change in the formula of a frequently abused prescription painkiller has many abusers switching to a drug that is potentially more dangerous, according to School of Medicine researchers. Because the formula change makes inhaling or injecting the opioid drug OxyContin more difficult, many users are switching to heroin.

Neuroscientists at WUSTL have discovered how to “read” a monkey’s mind and see how it plans to approach a task, even before it moves. The team investigated two monkeys — a hyperactive primate and a more contemplative thinker. The results are published in the July 19 online edition of Science.

A unique summer research program is providing 11 students who attend Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., with invaluable experience at the School of Medicine. The program offers the Meharry students the opportunity to conduct research with the School of Medicine’s renowned physicians and scientists.

Two weeks after being selected in the Sixth Annual Harlem Globetrotters player draft, 2012 graduate Dylan Richter (UAA) has announced he will hang up the basketball shoes and step into the corporate office. Richter has been hired full time as the Harlem Globetrotters’ digital marketing manager.
