WUSTL surgeon advises TV drama writers
on nerve injuries

Actor Patrick Dempsey plays Dr. Derek Shepherd, a surgeon on the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy. WUSTL reconstructive surgeon Susan E. Mackinnon, MD, advised the show on scenarios involving a hand injury suffered by the character.

Recreating mantis shrimp vision may aid biomedical imaging, weapons targeting

Mantis shrimp, aggressive, predatory sea crustaceans, have among the most sophisticated vision of all animals. A group of researchers, including Viktor Gruev, PhD, received a $3.5 million grant to re-engineer the eye of the mantis shrimp in a specialized camera. This camera could bring more precision to biomedical imaging and weapons targeting in defense.

A banner day for Burns’ fans: filmmaker
on campus to receive Humanities Medal

Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns received WUSTL’s 2012 International Humanities Medal and accompanying $25,000 Humanities Prize Nov. 16. While on campus, Burns delivered an Assembly Series talk, met with students and previewed three of his upcoming films.

Women’s basketball splits games against opponents

The women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season against No. 4 DePauw University Saturday, but bounced back with a big win over No. 21 Coe College Sunday at the Titan Tip-Off Tournament in Bloomington, Ill.
