Dance Marathon Nov. 3-4 to benefit St. Louis children’s hospitals

Some 900 students are planning to dance all night in the 14th annual St. Louis Area Dance Marathon. The 12-hour event begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Athletic Complex Field House. Proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Greater St. Louis. Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton is donating $14 for every employee who attends. A Faculty & Staff Reception is set for 4 p.m.

Clue to Alzheimer’s cause found in brain samples

Researchers at the School of Medicine have found a key difference in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease and those who are cognitively normal but still have the brain plaques that characterize this type of dementia.

Marine alumni return to campus

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton welcomed back two 2009 alums, Harrison Suarez (right) and Michael Haft — now both first lieutenants in the U.S. Marine Corps — who presented the university with a U.S. flag that was flown while they were in Afghanistan. The two men returned Oct. 20 to personally thank Wrighton and the university for helping prepare them to serve their country.

Guérin named chair of Computer Science
and Engineering
department

Roch Guérin, PhD, has been named chair of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, effective July 1, 2013. Guérin is the Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunications Networks and professor of electrical and systems engineering and computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania.

Former Alvin Ailey dancer leads master class

Elizabeth Roxas, a former principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre — who The New York Times once described as the “cool, still, lyrical center of the Ailey storm” — led a master class with students in the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences earlier this month.

Safe Trick-or-Treat Saturday in South 40

Students will be escorting little ghouls and goblins through the South 40 residence halls for the annual Safe Trick-or-Treat from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, on the Danforth Campus. Games, refreshments and face painting also are planned. The event is open to children ages 12 and under. Sign up by Wednesday, Oct. 24, by calling the Campus Y at (314) 935-5010.

Football wins at Denison

Head football coach Larry Kindbom celebrated his 60th birthday in style as the Bears posted an 18-13 victory at Denison University Oct. 20 at Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio. WUSTL opens up University Athletic Association play at home noon Saturday, Oct. 27, against Carnegie Mellon University.
