Panel discussion focuses on ‘politics, issues and theatrics’ of 2012 presidential election

Four Arts & Sciences faculty members will explore the “politics, issues and theatrics” of this year’s presidential election during a 6 p.m. panel discussion? Thursday, Oct. 18. The event, part of the Arts & Sciences Connections Series, is free and open to the WUSTL community. A? 5:30 p.m. reception will precede the discussion, titled “Decision 2012.” ??

Provost offering interdisciplinary teaching grants; workshop for prospective applicants Oct. 23

To help support interdisciplinary teaching, the Office of the Provost announces the second round of the Interdisciplinary Teaching Grant Program. The application deadline is Dec. 1. A workshop to help prospective applicants assemble proposals is set for 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. RSVPs are requested.

Genetic error linked to rare disease that causes chronic respiratory infections

Scanning the DNA of two people with a rare disease has led scientists to identify the genetic error responsible for their disorder, which causes persistent lung, sinus and ear infections, male infertility, and sometimes a reversed orientation of major organs in the body. The defect affects hair-like structures called cilia that extend from many cells in the body.

‘Queen of children’s music’ performs Oct. 20

Laurie Berkner, proclaimed the “queen of children’s music” by People magazine, is a regular on Nick Jr. and a founding member of “Kindie Rock” – progressive, kid-friendly music that isn’t saccharine or oversimplified. This Saturday, Berkner will launch Edison’s 2012-13 ovations for young people series with a solo acoustic show in the 560 Music Center.
